| The main portion of the Inn of the Beachcomber
was constructed in 1969. It was a 50 Unit Best Western property
until about 2000. I first drove through Gold Beach in August
of 1976 on the way from Carlsbad California to Salem Oregon.
I wish it was possible to say I remembered Gold Beach back then,
I can’t. I remember Crescent City California, about 50
miles south of Gold Beach, because of a bug in my omelet. I
know the month and date because I was off to football practice
at Willamette University my freshman year. It’s funny
to think I drove by the Beachcomber in 1976 when it was only
six years old. My sophomore year I meet Jeff Ferguson (Jerry’s
Jet Boats) and John Lander (he’s done two renovations
on the Beachcomber, this one and back in 1995). They were two
pretty good football players. When I looked them up after I
bought the Beachcomber I found out they were mainstays on the
“dirty dozen”, the state championship football team
back in 1977. My son Evan decided that before his freshman football
season at Sisters High School he deserved a vacation. I had
already finished researching development properties in the Central
and North coast and had wondered what I had missed when I drove
through gold beach in 1976. By chance we stayed at the Inn of
the Beachcomber. The place seemed taken care of on the outside.
On the inside the rooms were outdated, the beds were hard and
the rooms had no balconies to check out the spectacular ocean
view. The breakfast was ok but the breakfast area was crowded
and hot. When my wife said I could buy the former Best Western
style property it was easy to see the need to update the interior
of the rooms, add balconies and enlarge the breakfast area.
I found out the site had two and a half acres of unused land
up to the sand dune and thought that some small cabins up near
the breakers would be unique. |

| The goal of the renovation of the Beachcomber
is not just to fix the problems but to capture the feeling of
a simpler uncomplicated era; after all we have way too many
complications in our everyday lives already. I want to create
a feeling of a place time forgot. A place where guest can come
to get away from the pressure of the modern world and reconnect
with nature. Just a disclosure, I’m not perfect and the
Inn of the Beachcomber is a work in progress. If you are lucky
enough to get here this summer I hope it’s different next
summer in a better way. Our goal is to move forward and make
the Inn of The Beachcomber worthy of such a special place that’s
been blessed with so much of nature’s best. Because the
Inn of the Beachcomber had been a Best Western property for
thirty years I know the changes needed to accomplish my goal
to capture the feeling of a simpler uncomplicated era will be
a work in progress for a little while. |
